2o (325 x 197 mm). Engraved frontispiece portraits by I. Chantry, 2 engraved portraits and 6 engraved folding maps (second map with short tear and creasing at gutter, maps of Wolga and Persia with tears repaired on verso, some creasing). (Small rust hole on C1 affecting a few letters, some occasional pale spotting.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, endpapers renewed).

Second edition in English, after the first English edition of 1662 (the first edition in Dutch was published in 1647). Olearius was employed as secretary to the embassy sent by the Duke of Holstein to establish an overland trade route with Persia. A first embassy travelled to Russia in 1633-34 to secure a right of passage through the Csar's realms. The embassy to Persia itself was sent in 1635. Although a commercial failure, much valuable information was gathered by Olearius and published in this account. Wing O-270.
