12o (158 x 97 mm). (Some occasional spotting and staining.) Contemporary tree calf (joints cracked, spine chipping).

FIRST EDITION. Between 1802 and 1808, Patterson, an American sailor, made three voyages to the Pacific coasts and recorded his observations of Hawaii, Guinea, California, the northwest coast of America including Alaska, and Australia. Most important are his descriptions of Fiji, where he was shipwrecked in 1808 and remained for six months. The work was compiled by Ezekiel Terry, who writes in the preface that Patterson's "...nerves are so affected by his sufferings, as that he is incapable of writing himself, and the deficiency of his papers has been filled up by the compiler, under his inspection. Much pains has been taken in preparing this work for public view, to render it truly usefull and beneficial to the world." Howes refers to this as the second issue, noting a Rhode Island issue published the same year as the first; the Rhode Island issue is unrecorded in the other references sources cited. Ferguson 692; Forbes 470; Hill 1315; Howes P-122; Lada-Mocarski 74; Sabin 59145. RARE.
