2o (278 x 181 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved title, and 5 engraved maps (4 on verso of divisional titles). (Engraved title loose, first map repaired along inner margin, minor marginal dampstaining at end.) Contemporary black goatskin, gilt double fillet border, surrounding a double-fillet panel with circular corners and central lozgenge made up of small tools of floral design, dots and dotted lines, flat spine devided by double fillet in 19 small compartments, gilt edges (some wear to upper spine ends, ties lacking).
FIRST EDITION of Roberts's major work and one of the earliest systematic treatises on the subject. This comprehensive guidebook "provided not only the standard topographical information sought by English travellers abroad, but also full details of local commodities, currency, weights and measures, and rates of exchange. It was an immediate success with the mercantile community, and revised editions were published in 1671, 1677, and 1700" (DNB). The Chapter on the Americas is mainly concerning Mexico and Peru.
