SYRIA, Pedro de. Arte de la verdadera navegacion. Valencia: Juan Chrystostomo Garriz for F. Miguel, 1602.
4o (201 x 145 mm). Woodcut of three galleys on title. (A few marginal repairs, approximately 10 leaves with lower corners renewed, affecting a few letters on last leaf [supplied in manuscript], some occasional soiling and spotting.) 19th-century red blind-tooled calf.
FIRST EDITION OF THIS SCARCE SPANISH NAVIGATIONAL TREATISE. King Philip III appointed the author, originally a jurist, as chief pilot of the galleons of the fleet. He did not accept the office on account of his advanced age, but wrote this manual which proposes the construction of tables of the variation of the compass. He attributes the variations of the marine compass to differences in the magnetic pole. The discovery of America by Columbus is mentioned in the dedicatory letter. Within the text he calls America "Colonia," since it was discovered by Colon.
Prior to the text is a brief account of discovery and exploration, mentioning Columbus, Vasco de Gama, and Megellan. The text also makes references to navigation in the New World. Alden & Landis 602/105; Crone 108; JCB (3) II:19; Palau 314796; Sabin 94113.
