Madrid, 1800.

Broadsheets (626 x 494 mm). Manuscript title. 16 engraved maps (10 double-page). Contemporary Spanish mottled calf, covers and spine gilt-ruled (light wear to joints). Provenance: S. Alfonso Aguirre y Gadea, Conde de Yoldi (1764-1852), Spanish count, chamberlain at the court of King Kristian VIII of Denmark (signature on front free endpaper).

A very fine collection of maps taken from the extremely rare Spanish Atlas Maritimo Español (Madrid, 1789-1814). Vicente Tofiño de San Miguel was commissioned by the King to produce the first hydrographic atlas of the Spanish coast during the years 1783-1788. The Atlas Maritimo de España was the first great atlas of European waters published by the Spanish government. In 1789 the same cartographers began the huge Atlas Maritimo Español which included maps of the Western Hemisphere, sixteen of which are included here. The Dirección de Hidrografia oversaw this monumental project and continued to promote it even while the Peninsular Wars were being waged.

According to American Book Prices Current, no copies of the complete atlas have sold in at least 30 years. Based on the composition of other sets of the maps, the atlases were apparently assembled especially for presentation. The present set comes from the collection of the Conde de Yoldi, Alfonso Aguirre y Gadea, the Spanish chamberlain who served in the court of the Danish King Kristian VIII. See Phillips Atlases 4155.
