3 volumes, 12o (160 x 97 mm). Contemporary blue straight-grained morocco, spines gilt with ship stamps (some rubbing and minor wear). Provenance: La Grange (armorial bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. Turnbull and his partner, John Buyers, aware of the lucrative fur trade along the northwest coast of America, purchased and outfitted the Margaret and set out for America in 1800. They arrived in Sydney in 1801 and stayed at the Society Islands. On 17 December 1802, the ship arrived at the Hawaiian Islands, where it remained until 21 January 1803. Their speculation in the fur trade proved unsuccessful, and the voyage turned out to be a financial failure, yet Turnbull provided much interesting information about the islands of the Pacific, including Tonga and New Zealand. He eventually returned home by Cape Horn in the Calcutta, arriving in England in June 1804. Ferguson 421; Forbes 367; Hill 1725; Wantrup 116. (3)
