Lot Essay

The identity of the painter known as the Master of the Jugs has not yet been established. It is likely that he worked in Adriaen Brouwer's workshop. The artist must here have followed a prototype by Brouwer, known by the engraving in reverse by Theodor Matham (Wurzbach, I, 199, no. 18; see Trautscholdt, op.cit., p. 190, fig. 4). Trautscholdt believed that as the composition is in the opposite direction to Matham's engraving, it should be considered as the original by Brouwer, dating from circa 1625 and as such should be compared to the versions of the subject in Philadelphia and Basel (Trautscholdt, op.cit., fig. 8)
