Lot Essay

The same subject was treated by De Momper and Jordaens in a picture now in the Niedersächsische Landesgalerie, Hannover, inv.no. KA-52/1958 (see K. Ertz, op.cit., p. 519, no. 188, fig. 17), for which a date of circa 1600/05 has been suggested.

The reverse of the panel is branded with the coat-of-arms of the City of Antwerp and the panel maker's initials of Lambrecht Steens I (active 1608-1632)

We are grateful to Jorgen Wadum for identifying the panel maker's mark
