The biography of the artist is provided by I. Bergström in Dutch Still-life Painting in the 17th Century, 1956, pp. 289/90. Elliger was born in Gotheburg and is said to have studied with Daniel Seghers in Antwerp. In 1660 he is recorded in Amsterdam from where he moved to Altona in 1666. In 1670 he became court painter in Berlin. The present lot is to be dated to the German period of the artist, as the bright colours seem only to occur after a presumed contact with Georg Hinz.

Compare the painting, signed and dated 1676, in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg, inv.no. 358 and the picture, signed and dated 1673, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, inv.no. C215
