Lot Essay

As pointed out by Titia van Leeuwen in Still life in the Age of Rembrandt, exhibition catalogue, Auckland City Art Gallery, 1982, p. 169, Cornelis de Heem was one of Jan Davidsz. de Heem's most faithfull pupils. His handling sometimes comes very close to that of his famous father.

The present lot connects in part with the still life in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden (see Gemäldegalerie Dresden Alte Meister Katalog der ausgestellten Werke, 1992, p. 229, no. 1224, with ill.). This picture has a pendant showing oysters and a roemer (Gemäldegalerie Dresden; op.cit, no. 1225); thus it is possible that the present lot was also one of a pair.
