Slatkes (Pelletier a.o., op.cit., pp. 48-9) relates this to a drawing of an inn-keeper and guests including the same figure, in the same sense, in the upper left corner, in an unidentified collection. This drawing with signature 'A. Brauwer' can, according to Slatkes, be securely attributed to Adriaen van Ostade, and may be dated to the 1640s (Schnackenburg, op.cit., no. 433, as Isack van Ostade). Both Schnackenburg and Slatkes date this plate to before 1647.
