Lot Essay

A related study of a peasant seated towards the right and of a smoker, in the same sense, are in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (Schnackenburg, op.cit., nos. 173 (verso) and 203). This figure, in the same sense, also appears in a picture of two men at a table, formerly in the collection of Count Lanckoronski, Vienna (Hofstede de Groot 179). Both Schnackenburg and Slatkes date this plate to after 1670.
