A drawing of the bust of a bearded man in a flat hat in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam, may show the same model (Schnackenburg, op.cit., no. 107). Ostade's picture of the same composition, in the same sense, is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (P.J.J. van Thiel and others, Alle Schilderijen van het Rijksmuseum te Amsterdam, Amsterdam/Haarlem, 1976, p. 431, no. A301, illustrated). Schnackenburg dates this plate to circa 1660-70, while Slatkes dates it to circa 1668. He suggests that this may be a portrait of Adriaen van Ostade's brother Johannes, a baker, who died in 1668. It may have been intended as a memorial to his brother, whose children were placed under Adriaen's guardianship after their father's death.
