Traditionally the instrument shown has been identified as an organ, but it is in fact a hurdy-gurdy. A related drawing of a hurdy-gurdy player is in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (Schnackenburg, op.cit., no. 118). The artist's picture of a hurdy-gurdy player in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, is signed and dated 1648 (Hofstede de Groot 109).
