Lot Essay

A preliminary study on blue paper, in the same sense, is in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (unknown to Schnackenburg, inv.no. Album Figuurstudies II, 1981, no. 182-325, p. 61). Schnackenburg dates this plate to circa 1653- after 1660. A preliminary study for Saying Grace (B.34, dated 1653) is also in the Amsterdam album. It is in the same technique and on the same paper as the study for the present lot, and also in the same sense as the plate (Slatkes, op.cit., p. 238, illustrated). This leads Slatkes to date the present plate also to circa 1653.
