Lot Essay

As Slatkes (Pelletier a.o., op.cit., pp. 91-2) has suggested, the man looking into the empty pitcher depicts a 'kannekijker', or drunkard. Schnackenburg dates this plate to circa 1653-after 1660. It may be compared in style and handling to The Peasants' Quarrel, B.18, dated 1653, which leads Slatkes to date B.15 to that year also.
