inscribed 'Portrait of/John Fariner at Barton in the County, Le***/Volunteer Infantry His Commission as Captain bears/date November 2nd 1803 it was signed by that excellent/Monarch GEORGE III towards whom he bore a/most Loyal affection. He was made MAJOR Dec '27 1806/He died Novr 15th 1834 so wod have competed his 83rd/Year Decr 30th 1834' (on the reverse)
