Lot Essay

A preliminary study for this, in the same sense, is in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (Schnackenburg, op.cit., no. 208). A watercolour of the same subject, also in the same sense, signed with monogram and incised, is in the British Museum, London (Schnackenburg, op.cit., no. 209). No doubt Ostade was inspired for this by Rembrandt's etchings of comparable subject and format, Bartsch 133, 151, 163, 166, 171 and 172, dated between 1629 and 1639. Schnackenburg and Slatkes both date this plate to after 1670.
