As Slatkes observed (Pelletier a.o., op.cit., p. 120), this figure, wearing an apron, would not seem to be a peasant but a shopkeeper or someone similar. Schnackenburg dates this plate to circa 1647-52, while Slatkes narrows the date to circa 1647, comparing it to B.8 and B.23, both dated 1647. The size of this plate is the same as that of the following lot, B.22. It would seem possible that, as the figures face each other, they were intended as a pair or indeed previously one plate. The dating of both plates is comparable: B.22 is dated to circa 1647.
