A sketch comparable in subject, in the same sense, is in a German Private Collection, while a comparable watercolour, in the same sense and signed and dated 1673, is in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam (Schnackenburg, op.cit., nos. 223-4). In relation to this image, Slatkes (Pelletier a.o., op.cit., p. 161) refers to the Dutch saying 'iemand brillen verkopen' (to sell someone eyeglasses), which is associated with deception. He compares it to Herman Saftleven's print (B.2) of 1647 of an eyeglass pedlar, the subscript of which is 'Bedrieger' (Deceiver). Pelletier, op.cit., p. 160, compares the image to Rembrandt's etchings The strolling Musicians (B.119) and The Rat Catcher (B.121), the latter dated 1632. Schnackenburg and Slatkes date this plate to circa 1647-52.
