Lot Essay

No direct preliminary drawings for this plate are known, though Slatkes does compare the woman to a drawing of a peasant woman in the Rothschild Collection, the Louvre, Paris, and the man to a figure in a drawing of three peasants in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (Schnackenburg, op.cit., nos. 337 and 139). Schnackenburg dates this plate to circa 1653-60, Slatkes to circa 1648.
