Lot Essay

The preliminary study for this, in the same sense and incised, is in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (Schnackenburg, op.cit., no. 77). The subtle light coming through the opened door and the windows is wonderfully reflected by the figures in the interior, providing an intimate atmosphere. Schnackenburg dates this plate to circa 1653-after 1660, while Slatkes dates it somewhat earlier, to circa 1647-53, comparing the graphic style to B.46 of 1647 and B.18 and B.34 dated 1653. Slatkes also compares it to the signed picture of an interior in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, dated 1650 (P.J.J. van Thiel a.o., Alle Schilderijen van het Rijksmuseum te Amsterdam, Amsterdam/Haarlem, 1976, p. 429, no. A2332, illustrated), and to a picture offered at Christie's, London, 15 April 1992, lot 23, the latter showing two men paying the landlady, while others sit at a fireplace in the foreground.
