Lot Essay

This is comparable in handling to two of van den Broeck's drawings in the Fondation Custodia, Institut Néerlandais, Paris (K.G. Boon, The Netherlandish and German Drawings of the XVth and XVIth Centuries in the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris, 1992, I, pp. 57-8, nos. 34-5, III, plates 92-3), which both bear a very similar old inscription attributing them to Crispin van de Passe. Boon notes that van de Passe's name is often found on drawings by van den Broeck and suggests that this may be explained by the fact that many engravings after the latter's designs frequently give only his Christian name Crispin. The present composition was probably inspired by Dürer's engraving of the same subject (B.28).
