In its bared teeth, this lion bears some resemblence to the famous stone lions from the Lion Coutyard at the Alhambra (Manuel Casamar et al., Arte islamico en Granada, exhibition catalogue, Granada, 1995, nos.124-5, p.351). The strength of the carving and the slightly disproportionate head relate to earlier wooden sculpture in Christian Spain.
