Lot Essay

Faiyzallah was the brother of another late Mughal scribe 'Ismatullah Khan, and was a naskh scribe famous for copying many Qur'ans (Ghulam Muhammad Dihlavi, The Tadhkira-i-khushnavisan, Calcutta, 1910, p.127). Two calligraphic pages in an album of naskh are recorded by Faiyzallah who signed himself as a student of Muhammad 'Arif Yaqut Raqam Khan (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va asar-e khosh-nevisan, vol. VI, Teheran, 1358 sh., p. 121). Muhammad 'Arif was titled Yaqut Raqam Khan by Shah 'Alam (1119-24/AD 1707-1712) and reached a high standard in both naskh and thulth (Dihlavi, op. cit., p.126).
