Lot Essay

Comparable to Wierix's signed drawing on vellum of similar size dated 1584 in the British Museum, London, A.B. Popham, Catalogue of Drawings by Dutch and Flemish Artists preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, V, London, 1932, p. 196, no. 30, pl. LXXVII. Henkel, loc.cit., points out the similarity of the figure in the present drawing to that of in a print by Wierix (Alvin 1852), which leads him to suggest that these may depict the same model. The artist usually signed 'Johan Wierix'.
