SAFAVID PERSIA, 16TH CENTURY
Persian manuscript on gold-sprinkled buff paper, 90ff. plus four fly-leaves, each with 14ll. of strong black nasta'liq, within a variety of different panels with gold intercolumnar divisions between black rules, with red, blue and gold commas between columns, occasional words in similar colours, blue, orange and gold margins between black rules, blue outer rule, f.1r. with a gold and polychrome illuminated shamsa, f.1v. with similar illuminated heading, verso of final folio with a later added drawing of a lady heightened with red and gold, contemporary rich brown lacquer binding painted in gold and polychrome with a central medallion of a dragon with pendants containing paired fish surrounded by a forest scene showing simurghs, combat scenes and various animals, in meandering vine and cloudband borders, brown morocco doublures with blue and gold decoupé medallion, pendants and spandrels, some staining and smudging with occasional splits to the margins, areas of the binding with small repairs and relacquered areas
