SRI LANKA, LATE 17TH-EARLY 18TH CENTURY
Of rectangular form of solid ivory with hinged cover on four ball feet, the hinged cover with stepped concentric rectangles each carved with intricate floral scrolls, the sides with birds, felines and double-headed eagles against a ground of scrolling arabesques, the base plain, original silver hinges and inner lip

Lot Essay

This unusually small box is similar in form to a number of larger examples. From the way that they fit into their housings it is probable that the silver mounts found here are the originals. A particularly impressive silver-mounted rectangular box from the same origin was sold in these Rooms 25 November 1985, lot 234.
