Lot Essay

This miniature comes from a dispersed copy of the Razmnama, a Persian translation of the Hindu Mahabharata which was orignially comissioned by Akbar in 1582. This copy was dated AH 1025/1616 AD. The leading artist working on this manuscript was Fazl, and his signature is found on many of the illustrations. His work is found in several manuscripts made for Abdur Rahim, a courtier, general and poet of Akbar's time (S.C.Welch, The Art of Mughal India, New York, 1963, pl. 33, p. 74)
