A QAJAR GOLD DAMASCENED WATERED STEEL SHEILD (DHAL)
IRAN, 19TH CENTURY
Of shallow domed circular form with flaring rim, four rounded bosses in the centre, the centre with a gold damascened roundel with nasta' liq inscription which reads Shah Sultan Husayn surrounded by cusped open medallions and radiating angular panels, in a border of inscription cartouches containing Persian verses alternating with hunting scenes between minor stripes, a leather handle on reverse, slightly rubbed to the damascening
14¼in. (16.2cm.) diam.
