This was a popular design in Istanbul in the second half of the sixteenth century. It was used in the Has Oda (Privy Chamber) of Murad III at the Topkapi Saray Palace and in its large domed antechamber (Rogers, J.M. (ed.): The Topkapi Saray Museum, Architecture, Boston, 1988, p.41, pls.61-8). A similar tile was sold in these rooms on 27 April 2004, lot 212.
