Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Werner Sumowski for noting that the Christ figure, of excellent quality, relates to Rembrandt's Noli Me Tangere of 1651 in Braunschweig (see A. Bredius, Rembrandt: Gemälde, Vienna, 1935, pl. 583 and K. Bauch, Rembrandt: Gemälde, Berlin, 1966, pl. 83). He regards this picture as a studio work of the early 1650s, close to Willem Drost.
