The composition repeats, with some variants such as the omission of the bread, the painting by Ribera in the Prado, Madrid, known also through a workshop replica in the Gemäldegalerie, Pommersfelden.
We are grateful to Professor Nicola Spinosa for proposing an attribution to Bartolomeo Bassante (Brindisi 1618-c. 1650 Naples), a little-known Neapolitan artist who produced other copies after Ribera, one of which, signed with his initials, is in the Pinacoteca d'Errico, Matera. Professor Riccardo Lattuada has proposed an alternative attribution to Hendrick van Somer (Amsterdam 1615-1685 Naples), a Dutch painter active in Italy and a distinguished pupil of Jusepe de Ribera in Naples.
