The present picture is a version of Ruin in a Clearing (see W.G. Constable, Richard Wilson, London, 1953, p. 231, no. 128b, illustrated), which Waterhouse dated to circa 1755, but which Constable (op.cit) believed to be slightly later and executed in Rome. It is likely that the present painting was executed after Wilson's return from Italy in 1757.
