The confident attitude of this sitter is effectively conveyed by the artist with the use of bold, expressive brushstrokes, which are particularly noticeable in the white highlights in the hair and foulard. Although this portrait has traditionally been attributed to Hyacinthe Rigaud, the dry strokes used in the hair and the ruddy tones of the flesh are more akin to the work of Jean-Baptiste van Loo.
