Lot Essay

This may be compared to the artist's grey wash drawing of a man in a hat, signed and also dated 1693, sold in these Rooms, 14 November 1988, lot 42, illustrated, which is of the same size as the subject of the present lot. Both were possibly part of a series of characters. It is very rare to find wide blank margins around 17th Century drawings, as these were mostly trimmed in the 18th Century. Robert-Jan te Rijdt will illustrate the present lot in his forthcoming article on the subject of mounting and trimming drawings in Holland in the 18th Century.
