Lot Essay

The signature is comparable to that on the artist's portrait of a woman in the Albertina, Vienna, W. Bernt, Die Niederländischen Maler und Zeichner des 17. Jahrhunderts, IV, Munich, 1979, no. 287, illustrated. It is dated 1653, the year of his departure to Rome where he died in 1696. Only very few drawings by the artist survive.
