Lot Essay

Taken at night the present photograph is arguably one of the most beautiful of the entire Cologne as it Was series, using the blacks of night and the glow of the lights to illuminate the majestic Cathedral in a way that is evocative and atmospheric. Sander's concerns, as in his portraits, may be above all typological and his presentation generally matter-of-fact, but here he expresses a more lyrical vision.
