The present lot is one of the rarest and most beautiful of Weston's photographs of sand dunes at Oceano, contrasting the sonorous, dense blacks with the soft precision of the ripples of sand.

The only other prints of this image known to exist are in institutional collections: Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Arizona; Huntington Library, Pasadena, California; Special Collections, University of California, Santa Cruz, California; Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois.

This print was given by Weston to a friend of his, a photographer, who kept it until his recent death, at which time it was sold from his estate, through the Weston Gallery, to the present owner.
