By 1940 Siskind was overlaying his social concerns with more formal preoccupations. Increasingly through that decade, instead of depicting figures he would present traces such as an abandoned glove or in the present photograph a garment. The present photograph also parallels those of Walker Evans and anticipates Siskind's own later preoccuption with surfaces and with walls seen frontally.
