Lot Essay

With the advent of rail travel and improved road networks portable games sets were in demand. The problem arose of maintaining the position of the pieces on the board whilst on the move. In 1852 John Jaques the Younger applied for a patent for a board with a locking mechanism to secure the pegged pieces. This patent was re-issued in 1854 when Jaques marketed the set as the 'Statu Quo'. It continued to be sold by John Jaques & Son Ltd. until 1940. See Michael Mark, ibid, fig. 33.
