The king -- 3¼in. (8.2cm.) high; the pawn -- 1 5/8in. (4.2cm.) high

Lot Essay

This particular design is attributed to Lord John Hay and pre-dates the Staunton pattern by several years. It was popular in Scotland, hence the association with Edinburgh, that was marketed by Jaques, who later took on the model and produced examples in ivory, boxwood and ebony.
