The ambiguity over the precise origins of this elegant design is discussed by Gareth Williams, see Master Pieces, Apple Press 2000, page 75. The slender baluster form shared by the king, queen, bishop and pawn, together with the rook's tall spire, are traits associated with Danish, Dutch and German sets.
