Lot Essay

This set reputedly comes from the estate of Hugh Trevor-Roper, Baron Dacre of Glanton (1914-2003), and described as being Napoleonic prisoner of war.
A comparable chess set is illustrated in Victor Keats The Illustrated Guide to World Chess Sets, B.T.Batsford Ltd. 1985, fig. 50, page 51. This example, from the Harbeson Collection, is described as Spanish' and 19th Century, based upon similar carved decoration on the pawns and the 'Spanish Pulpit' sets.
