Lot Essay

(1) The Battle of Höchstädt on the River Danube took place in 1704 between the Austrian Imperial Army under Prince Eugen of Savoy and the English under the Duke of Marlborough. The latter is shown at the right raising his sword, as may be identified from the print after this drawing. The Prince of Savoy is not identified in the print, but is presumably be on the right. The town Höchstädt is indicated by no. 8. As a result of this battle in the War of the Spanish Succession, Vienna was saved.
