A QAJAR GOLD AND SILVER DAMASCENED CUT STEEL SHIELD, IRAN, 19TH CENTURY
Of circular form with four raised bosses, the top finely decorated with a dense pattern of lotus flowers and vines upon which eight double ended cartouches with applied silver flowers alternate with lobed panels featuring seated figures on a gold damascened hatched background, the border a series of alternating cartouches and roundels featuring calligraphic inscriptions and brass rim, the reverse with red cotton backing and applied steel rings - 18in. (45.7cm.) diam
