Lot Essay

Robert-Jan te Rijdt has tentatively suggested the attribution to this rare artist, who was born in Boston, and died in Margate, England. After his sojourn in Holland, he may have boarded for England in Veere, known for its trade with that country. Of two drawings by the artist in the Amsterdam municipal archives from the Van Eeghen Collection (B. Bakker, E. Fleurbaay and A.W. Gerlagh, De verzameling Van Eeghen, Amsterdamse tekeningen 1600-1950, Zwolle/Amsterdam, 1988, pp. 181-2, nos. 153-4, illustrated), the latter is signed and dated 1762 and shows a similar handling of the shipping in the background.
