Lot Essay

This slipper is of the same type as that created by 'Ali Muhammad Isfahani, an Iranian potter of the later 19th century. The form is one based on 17th century ceramic shoe bath rasp, where the unglazed soles were used for rubbing dead skin and dirt from the body. For very similar example in the Victoria and Albert Museum see T. Stanley, Palace and Mosque, 2004, p. 131
