Lot Essay

The figures may be compared to those in the artist's picture sold at Sotheby's Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 29 September 1990, lot 330, illustrated. The ruin of the Huis te Merwede, near de Koningh's home town Dordrecht, also appears seen from the same viewpoint in the artist's picture of an ice scene, present whereabouts unknown.
