The term 'Master' is a reference to both the size of such salts and the possible restriction in their use to those at the head of the table. For similar see Cotterell, Pewter down the ages, Fig. 64. Cotterell describes this salt, now in the V & A Museum, as a 'Rara Avis' to the English collector.
It is interesting to compare the top of the salt with the saucer lot 115 in this sale.
